Quick answers before you start

What should a UAE residence application file establish?

Establish the selected category, sponsor or eligibility basis and applicant's current status. Prepare the identity and route-specific evidence, with any required medical and identity appointments included in the sequence.

How do I know whether entry or residence is approved?

Check the actual official record and the stage it describes. An entry permit or supporting appointment outcome is not the same as a final residence issuance; retain the relevant application reference and issued output.

What the work covers

Expand a deliverable for the detail.

A sponsor and eligibility file

Organise employment, company or relationship records establishing the proposed basis for residence.

A status and prerequisite tracker

Review existing permits and references so cancellation, entry or status changes follow the correct sequence.

An issuance handover

Check residence and identity records, retain references and note expiry dates and outstanding delivery actions.

Eligibility, required attendance and approval are determined by the authorities. Residence does not replace any separate work authorisation.

Prepare with a clear checklist

Documents for new residence and renewal

Keep the personal and linked-requirement records together, then use the evidence group for the residence basis under review. The issuing authority confirms the final checklist for each applicant.

Prepare a complete residence application or renewal

This guide is for a new residence application or renewal after the category has been identified. The file needs evidence for that basis, whether employment, business ownership, family sponsorship or another recognised route. If you are still comparing categories, use the visa route guide first.

We organise the residence file and application sequence around the relevant sponsor and authority. ICP links residence issuance with the Emirates ID application; Dubai has its own GDRFA channels. Establish which actions require the applicant’s attendance and which depend on a prior approval. A renewal also needs a check that the relevant conditions continue to be met.

A closer look

Eligibility, current status and linked residence steps

Build the sequence from the selected category and the applicant’s existing records.

01

Build the file for the selected residence category

An employee may need the relevant work-authorisation records; a business owner may need licence and ownership evidence; a family application needs relationship and sponsor information. Keep these categories distinct. A broad personal document bundle is less useful than a file that answers the selected authority’s requirements. For foreign-issued relationship or qualification records, check the applicable document attestation requirements.

02

Plan a renewal or change of sponsor from current status

An applicant already in the UAE may have an existing residence permit, entry permission or cancellation record. Review those documents before deciding the order of the next application. The correct sequence can differ from a new arrival’s process, particularly when a sponsor or employment relationship is changing.

03

Coordinate medical fitness, Emirates ID and issuance

Medical fitness requirements and Emirates ID steps form part of the applicable residence workflow. Check the exact requirement for the applicant’s age and category. Track each reference separately so a medical result, identity application or payment receipt is not mistaken for final residence issuance. Source: ICP: Issuing Residency Permit.

The work, step by step

A practical residence application sequence

Keep the eligibility file and linked applications aligned throughout preparation and review.

  1. 01

    Confirm the category

Review why the applicant qualifies, who sponsors the application and which authority handles it. For renewals, check whether the underlying circumstances have changed.

  2. 02

    Check current status and documents

Review existing permits, passport validity and supporting records. Resolve name discrepancies and identify required attestation, translation or sponsor updates.

  3. 03

    Complete prerequisite applications

Coordinate the relevant entry, status or employer steps in the confirmed order. Retain references and make sure the next application uses the correct details.

  4. 04

    Arrange medical and identity steps

Support the applicable medical fitness and Emirates ID process. Monitor missing results or appointment requirements before the residence file is finalised.

  5. 05

    Review issuance and handover

Check the electronic residence record, identity status and remaining delivery tasks. Record renewal requirements and provide the applicant with the final reference information.

Plan your budget

Residence costs depend on the application route

Compare quotations using the same permit category, applicant status and supporting services.

Cost components and what each covers
Cost componentWhat to account for
Immigration chargesResidence issuance or renewal, linked entry steps and any applicable status adjustment should be identified separately.
Emirates ID and medicalIdentity-card and required medical fitness costs depend on the service and duration. Distinguish optional appointment upgrades from mandatory items.
Insurance and documentsHealth cover, translations and attestation costs vary with the applicant and evidence required for the category.
Application coordinationDefine whether the scope includes sponsor liaison, appointment support, query follow-up and post-issuance checks, as well as the initial submission.

Existing penalties or corrective work can change the total. Confirm the current official position before relying on an estimate prepared for a different case.

Know what happens when

Status, appointments and issuance

The full process includes preparation and linked tasks beyond the residence service’s own published processing target.

Before the application

File readiness

Missing sponsor evidence, unaccepted foreign certificates or a passport update can hold up the start.

Appointment-dependent

Medical and identity steps

Attendance, results and any requested follow-up determine when the linked records are available for processing.

After authority review

Issuance and delivery

Residence confirmation and physical identity-card delivery are different milestones and should be tracked separately.

Looking ahead

Manage renewal and changes with an organised record

Residence administration continues when the underlying details change.

Renewal preparation

Check permit expiry, passport validity and continued category eligibility before starting the next renewal.

Record updates

Review changes to passports, personal details, employment or sponsorship and use the appropriate amendment or new-application process.

Family coordination

Where dependants are involved, review their records alongside changes to the sponsor’s permit and keep each application’s dates visible.

UAE residence application and renewal questions

Need to discuss your own circumstances?

What is the difference between an entry permit and residence?

An entry permit addresses entry or the relevant preliminary status. Residence issuance is a further process with category-specific requirements. Check which stage has actually been approved.

Do all residents need the same supporting documents?

No. Identity documents are a common starting point, but employment, owner and family routes require different evidence. The selected category determines the complete checklist.

Do children need the same medical fitness process as adults?

Residence medical-fitness screening generally applies from age 18. Emirates Health Services specifies applicants aged 18 or older. Confirm the appropriate screening service and any category-specific requirements for each person. Source: Emirates Health Services: Residence medical-fitness service card.

Can my employer complete every step without me?

An employer can handle relevant company and application tasks, but some identity or medical steps require your attendance. Plan travel and availability around those confirmed requirements.

Does renewal happen automatically?

No. A renewal requires the applicable application and supporting conditions. Begin preparation early enough to update the passport, insurance or sponsor evidence where necessary.

How do I know the application is complete?

Check the issued residence record and the linked Emirates ID status, including names, passport details and validity dates. If a medical result or payment exists but issuance is unclear, follow the pending residence application checks using the original references.
