Quick answers before you start

How do I identify the right document-attestation route?

Start with the issuing country, document type and intended recipient. Obtain the recipient's requirements, then confirm the authentication sequence, document format and any translation needed before arranging originals or paying for preparation.

Can I substitute copy certification for attestation?

Only if the receiving institution accepts that procedure for the intended use. Copy certification and authentication serve different purposes, so confirm whether the recipient needs one, both or another specified form of evidence.

The service in brief

Start with where it was issued, its format and the recipient’s written requirements.

What the work covers

A document route brief

Identify the issuing country, recipient and prior certifications needed before the selected attestation stage.

A preparation checklist

Distinguish eligible original digital files from paper originals, recording translations and certifications already held.

A submission and delivery record

Track the service channel, references and completed output against the recipient’s request.

Certification and acceptance are determined by the authorities and recipient. A scan is not automatically an eligible original digital document.

Documents required for attestation support

Start with the original format of the document. Both routes need the recipient and preparation information below; digital eligibility must be checked before selecting a service channel.

Preparation view: All preparation groups

1 preparation items

Paper originals

Where the physical route applies, provide the complete original with existing endorsements and attachments. Check its condition and avoid lamination or unapproved alterations.

Original digital documents

For an eligible digital route, retain the file issued by the authority with its verification feature. A photograph or scan of a paper document does not replace it.

Route and recipient information

Provide the institution, country and purpose, with any required wording, certification instructions or deadline supplied by the recipient.
Share evidence of prior origin-country, consular or ministry processing, and any certified translation, so the remaining steps can be identified.
Prepare the identity, authorisation and contact details required by the selected channel, including who may arrange collection or receive original documents.

Keep a clear copy and inventory of every original before handing it to a processing or delivery provider.

Services / The essentials

Match the attestation process to the document and destination

Our document attestation support coordinates the authentication of signatures and seals for the receiving institution’s process. The correct route depends on where the document was issued, what type of document it is and where it will be used. Those details should be confirmed before original documents are sent or fees are paid.

Education certificates, civil-status records and company documents may need different preparation. Attestation is separate from certifying a true copy, translation or qualification recognition. For an overseas power of attorney, the powers and recipient’s acceptance requirements also need review; authenticating the document does not settle those questions.

A closer look

Document origin, preparation and attestation route

Confirm the route before paying for translation or dispatching originals.

01

Check the issuing country and original format

Record the issuing country and issuing body, together with the current form of the document. An original paper certificate, an electronically issued record and a scan are not necessarily interchangeable. If the document has already been authenticated, check the existing endorsements and confirm which stages remain rather than starting the chain again without a reason.

02

Prepare originals and accepted translations

MoFA’s courier route requires the original document in Arabic or English, or accompanied by a legally certified translation, with relevant prior certification where applicable. The document must not be laminated. Names, dates and document details should be checked against the intended application so that a spelling mismatch or missing page is identified before processing. 03

Confirm digital eligibility or courier handling

MoFA now distinguishes eligible digital documents from courier-based processing. Its current digital service is for supported UAE-issued electronic documents intended for use abroad; an ordinary scan is not an original digital document. Documents issued outside the UAE follow the applicable origin-country and UAE-mission procedures, with the selected mission’s current requirements checked before submission. Plan your budget

Attestation fees and processing costs

The total depends on the document category, number of documents, countries involved and the stages already completed.

Cost components and what each covers
Cost componentWhat to account for
Authority attestation feesPersonal and commercial documents can have different charges, and separate authorities or missions may charge for their own stages.
Coordination and document checkingThe service proposal should state which route review, applications, tracking and handover work are included.
Translation or preliminary certificationA legally certified translation, issuer verification or other preliminary processing may be required before the final attestation stage.
Courier and overseas handlingOriginal documents may need tracked delivery within the UAE or between countries, with the relevant handling costs identified separately.
Recipient-specific additional workExtra certified copies or destination-country procedures should be quoted only where they are needed for the intended use.

Confirm the fee category and selected completion option before submitting an application.

Know what happens when

Preparation, attestation and delivery

The complete route can include several authorities, so a single processing estimate should not be treated as the duration of the whole journey.

Before application

Document readiness

Reissued certificates, translations or missing origin-country endorsements can determine when the attestation request is ready.

Selected service route

Ministry or mission processing

Availability and review depend on the issuing country, document category and assigned digital or physical channel.

After attestation

Delivery and onward acceptance

Allow for original-document collection and return where relevant, followed by any additional destination-country or recipient checks.

Looking ahead

After attestation

A complete handover should make the document easier to use and verify later.

Check every page and endorsement

Compare the returned document with the original inventory and confirm that all attachments and attestation pages are present.

Preserve digital verification

Retain the original digital output, reference number and verification details rather than relying only on a printed copy or screenshot.

Keep recipient-specific requirements

A later use may involve another institution or country with different requirements. Retain the previous route record and assess any new request on its own terms.

Document attestation questions

Need to discuss your own circumstances?

Is attestation the same as a certified true copy?

No. A true copy certifies the relationship between a copy and an original, while attestation authenticates relevant signatures or seals. Ask which service the recipient actually requires.

Can I upload a scan for digital attestation?

MoFA’s current digital route requires an eligible original electronic document with a verification mechanism. A scan or photograph of a paper certificate is not sufficient for that route.

What happens with documents issued outside the UAE?

MoFA guidance describes origin-country authentication and UAE-mission steps, followed by the applicable UAE processing. Confirm the current process with the relevant mission because availability and channels differ.

Does attestation translate the document?

No. Translation is separate. The required language and accepted translator depend on the attestation channel and the institution that will receive the document.

Can laminated documents be submitted?

MoFA states that documents on its physical attestation route must not be laminated. Check the appropriate replacement or issuer process rather than trying to remove protective material yourself.

Does an attested degree automatically have academic recognition?

No. Authentication and qualification recognition address different questions. If an employer or immigration authority requests recognition or equivalency, confirm that separate requirement before relying on the certificate for a residence application.

Will the document be accepted in another country?

Acceptance depends on the destination and recipient. MoFA’s completion options can involve different onward steps, so confirm what the selected route includes before paying.
