Quick answers before you start

What should I prepare before requesting a power of attorney?

Identify the principal, intended representative, task or asset, and receiving institution. Record the intended powers and limits so the appropriate legal and notarial professionals can assess the document and signing requirements.

How do I choose between broad and specific powers?

Start with the transaction the representative needs to complete. Discuss the required powers and intended limits with the responsible legal professional and recipient; a broad document should not be assumed necessary for a single defined task.

Documents required for a power of attorney

The notary or receiving institution confirms the final requirements. Prepare the identity and transaction information before commissioning the final wording.

2 preparation items

Parties and instructions

Provide the relevant passport and Emirates ID details where held, with consistent names and contact information for the people involved.
Describe the actions to be authorised, intended recipient, proposed duration and any limits. Include the recipient’s required wording or checklist if supplied.

Supporting authority and assets

For a corporate principal, provide the licence, constitutional documents and relevant board, shareholder or other signatory authorisation required for the proposed act.
A property, share, vehicle or other specific transaction may require ownership or registration details so the document identifies its subject accurately.
Supply earlier powers, relevant revocations or foreign documents where they affect the instructions, together with accepted translations or attestations already obtained.

Do not sign or alter a draft independently when the chosen channel requires a particular signing or verification process.

Services / The essentials

Prepare a power of attorney for a defined transaction

Our power of attorney service helps you prepare for a document that authorises a named person to act within defined powers. The useful starting point is the transaction: what needs to be done, who will accept the document and which powers the representative actually needs. A precise brief helps avoid paying for a document that does not fit the intended use.

Company administration, property transactions and personal matters can require different powers and supporting evidence. Preparation can organise the brief and records for professional review; tailored legal drafting and advice need the appropriate professional engagement. If the document is being signed overseas, check the attestation and authentication route as well as the intended recipient’s wording requirements.

A closer look

Purpose, powers and the signing route

Establish the intended use before drafting powers or booking a signing service.

01

Define the powers the recipient requires

Define the task before choosing between a broad authority and a transaction-specific document. Identify the recipient, asset or company involved, permitted actions and any limits. A bank, land authority or company registrar may have particular acceptance requirements. Confirm those requirements at the outset so that the draft is designed for the real transaction.

02

Review limits and the principal’s signing authority

The principal should review the names, identification details, powers, duration and any ability to appoint another representative. For a company principal, the signatory’s authority must also be established through the relevant corporate records. The representative’s convenience should not be the only consideration when deciding how much authority to give or how long it should last. If the request is only to witness an existing signature, confirm whether the separate signature-witnessing route meets the recipient’s instruction.

03

Choose the notarial and authentication route

Select the authentication channel according to the document, parties and intended use. The Ministry of Justice offers a digital power-of-attorney service using UAE PASS, while ADJD provides English-language notarial services for eligible transactions. Overseas execution can involve a separate attestation route. Acceptance by the final recipient should be checked alongside the notarial process. Know what happens when

Review, signing and onward use

The signing stage should follow agreement of the purpose, wording and supporting authority.

Before authentication

Instructions and draft

Timing depends on the complexity of the powers, available corporate approvals and the recipient’s response to any wording questions.

Chosen service channel

Notarial or digital procedure

Identity verification, document review, signatures and appointment availability determine how the selected route proceeds.

Where required

Attestation and onward use

Foreign documents or overseas use can introduce additional authorities, translations and delivery stages after the initial signing.

Looking ahead

After the document is issued

Keep control of where the power is used and review it when the underlying transaction changes.

Preserve the complete output

Keep the authenticated document, any digital verification page and supporting approvals together. Avoid editing or separating parts of an issued digital instrument.

Track its purpose and duration

Record the powers granted, any stated expiry and the institutions that received it, especially when the representative’s role is temporary.

Review changes or revocation

If the task ends or instructions change, arrange the appropriate review and revocation process and confirm how relevant recipients should be notified.

Power of attorney preparation questions

Need to discuss your own circumstances?

What is the difference between general and specific powers?

A broad document covers a wider range of acts, while a specific one is directed at a defined task or asset. The choice should follow the transaction and the principal’s intended limits.

Can a company grant a power of attorney?

A corporate principal can require additional evidence of who is authorised to sign and approve the powers. Review the company’s documents and the selected notary or recipient requirements.

Can the process be completed online?

Digital routes are available, including the Ministry of Justice service and ADJD channels. Eligibility, identity checks and the document type determine the suitable process.

Does every power of attorney need Arabic translation?

Language requirements depend on the channel and recipient. ADJD has an English-language notary service, while another authority or transaction may require an accepted Arabic version.

Can a document signed overseas be used in the UAE?

The receiving institution and notarial or attestation requirements need to be checked. An overseas document may require origin-country and UAE authentication steps before it is accepted.

Will a notarised document automatically be accepted by every bank?

No. A bank can impose its own wording and acceptance requirements. Check those before finalising the powers. For a company account, the banking preparation guide also explains the wider corporate and business evidence a bank may request.

Can the powers be changed after signing?

Do not edit the authenticated document. A change may require a replacement or formal amendment or revocation process, depending on the document and relevant authority.
